So proud of Melanie! Such a well deserved win! She was inspirational, graceful, humble, and beautiful all season long, and I'm so happy she won! Major props to Sasha though, she was amazing all season, and had she had a better initial partner, I think it could have been a closer battle. I can not believe that the top 2 had a combined 79% of the vote!!!! AMAZING!!!
Overall I enjoyed the finale, especially the Matt Flint routine with Nick and Jess! Man, Nick is so incredible, I am so sad we didn't get to see more of him this season.
A couple minor complaints though:
1. Why didn't Jordan dance??? The vulture dance, the pas de deux with Brandon, or Nutbush City Limits with Ade would have all been solid options, and I would have rather seen those instead of the woodpecker dance or the Tadd/Lauren hat dance. Just saying.
2. Regardless of my feelings for Ricky, it would have been nice for him to get to perform since everyone loved him.
These two made the Top 8/6, and they should have had a chance to perform once more for their fans!

Finale time! For how fabulous this season has been, I’m thinking this finale will NOT disappoint!
Cat’s outfit is already not disappointing…she looks fabulous. Not too many slip ups for Miss Deeley this season ☺
Melanie and Marko, Disco w/ Doriana Sanchez
Finally! I’ve missed Doriana this season, but this song choice was just awful. The dance was way too fast for the music. The routine seemed slow with the music, even though I know the steps were fast. The lifts also looked a little off (agree with Mary and Nigel), which is weird for these two. I gotta say, this was probably the worst routine this couple has done. Bad timing for the finale.
Sasha and Mark, Contemporary w/ Sonya
What an amazing compliment to have Sonya choreograph an ode to you! I think Sonya and Sasha will be working together for awhile! This routine was just an amazing display of Sasha’s literal strength. She took that routine on full force and KILLED IT. She really is making a case for herself early tonight! Get it girl!
Tadd and Joshua, Krump w/ Lil C
Was that some kind of joke? NO ONE has abs that strong, let alone two people?!?! Seriously??? That was ridiculously impressive. Aside from maybe Twichington’s routine, that was one of the best routine Lil C has ever choreographed. You could see Tadd trying so hard not to show off his adorable little smile, and he did an admirable job with that. He definitely danced the shit out of it though.
Melanie and Robert, Contemporary w/ Stacy Tookey
Leave it to Stacy Tookey to wring the emotion right out of you. Man. What a beautiful routine! Seriously, if I had one word to describe Melanie, it would be ANGELIC. And, did anyone get excited about Melanie potentially playing “Baby” in the Dirty Dancing remake??? Kenny Ortega said he’d push to the front of the line to work with her…it’s a definite possibility. I’d pay to see that.
Sasha and Marko, Broadway w/ Spencer Liff
What a cute routine! Sasha is such a chameleon, I love it! She transformed from a warrior princess to a lady at the drop without a hitch! And she most definitely looked drop dead gorgeous. Nigel would have liked “more character”, which I find odd because I thought that both of them had so much character in that! Marko and his cute little nerdy glasses was just wonderful. Loved it!
Melanie did a solo. It was pretty ☺
Marko did a solo. It was wonderful ☺
Sashsa and Tad, Cha Cha with Mark Ballas
That was awkward and a horrible song choice. Boo. Good thing everyone likes you guys, that was really bad. And Sasha is really tall. Sorry, Mark, stick with DWTS.
Marko and Lauren Froderman, Contemporary w/ Tessandra Chavez
Marko is at his best when he’s being vulnerable, and that showed so much in this piece. He and Lauren worked so well together, and they were in sync the whole time, both in choreography and in emotional level. I especially loved that triple spinning lift thing they did. Gorgeous. Well done, Tessandra! Not sure what that scarf thing was around Marko’s waist, but other than that, it was fantastic!
Tadd did a solo. It was adorable ☺
Melanie and Tadd, Jazz w/ Ray Leeper
I have got start by saying DAMN MELANIE! So hot! This was just pure FUN! I loved the interaction between these two – great chemistry! It was flirty without being obvious and sexy without trying too hard! I just loved it!
Sasha did a solo. It was wonderful ☺
Sasha and Melanie, Contemporary w/ Stacy Tookey
Stacy Tookey has really been killing it this season. Everything she’s done has been so strong and powerful, this piece very much included. The piece really highlighted their acting skills (as Kenny Ortega said, they’re “actresses who can dance”). It was really cool to see Melanie take on some of Sasha’s power and Sasha take on some of Melanie’s grace. Osmosis dance training! One of these girls is gonna be the winner, I just don’t know who!!
Tadd and Marko, Stepping w/ Chuck Maldonado
This was just a weird routine. I absolutely hated the boots, and I think a shoe change would have made this 100 times better. They seemed to be sliding around on the rubber soles. Fun song, fun boys, fun choreo, poor costumes…that’s my assessment. Nigel said he still thought a boy would win. Well DUH.
I have to say, this was quite the letdown from last week, but I just figure that was because they’re all just so exhausted. I think the song choices being AWFUL also contributed to the mediocrity, so a fair warning to choreographers – PICK GOOD MUSIC.
I still am pulling for Melanie for the win, but I would be 100% happy if Sasha won as well. Either of them, they’re both great and they both deserve it.

Finally, a fully fabulous finale!
Sorry, I just love alliteration :)
I know drama, suspense, mystery all make for good TV, but tonight I really just wanted Cat to tell me what I wanted to hear. And quickly. Even though we didn't find out the last of the Final 4 until literally the last possible minute, I still feel like the show flew by! Oh wait, that might be because I fast forwarded through it. Oops.
Loved the encore of Lauren and Kent's "Collide" routine! It's so youthful in feel but mature in technique, and there are no two dancers that could have performed that routine better than those two. Good week for Kent! Love that guy! Wonder if Dominic was jealous of Lauren's lip lock at the end of that though ;)
So after all these weeks of competition, it's the exact four I wanted to see in the finale. While I'd like to say I really don't care who wins because I DO love them all, I think Melanie really deserves to take this season. She excelled in everything and really just seems like the sweetest, most wonderful person ever! Sasha would be a close second, and if she didn't have a HORRID partner for the first 5 weeks, she might be in my top spot. Producers, you suck at partnering. Call me up next season, I'll do it for you. I promise to be unbiased! Really!!!
So, next week we get to see Melanie/Sasha/Marko/Tad dance with each other AND all-stars (including Joshua!!!), and I have to say, the choreographers better BRING IT! I'd personally love to see a Wade Robson routine pop up in there.
Also, since I know I won't have time to do this Wednesday, these are the encore routines I'd like to see in Thursday's results finale:
- Sasha and Twitch, "Misty Blue"
- Melanie and Marko, "I Got You"
- Jordan and Ade, "Nutbush City Limits"
- Ryan and Ricky, cult of fashion zombie-esque piece
- Clarice and Jess, Foxtrot
- Caitlynn and Mitchell, contemporary routine in the chairs
- Melanie and Neil, "Total Eclipse of the Heart"
- Jordan and Brandon, Desmond and Dwight piece
- Jordan and Tad, bird routine or "Memories"
- Sasha and Alex, Tyce's jazz piece
- Marko and Allison, Sonya contemporary piece
That's enough, right??

Super 6!
Top 6 show always makes me nervous!!! I feel like the dancers are so tired and sometimes it really shows in the performance, especially if they’re each doing three routines. Maybe having the all-stars this time will prevent some of that? I don’t know. Regardless, I’m nervous. Nervous that Caitlynn will make the finale (ok yeah right), nervous that Ricky will make the finale (that actually might happen), nervous that good dancers will get bad choreo, nervous that I’m going to see all contemporary/jazz routines tonight. So, those are my concerns heading into tonight.
I have got to say, Sasha’s hair looks FAB in the intros tonight! Well done, hair and make up team! Well done! Mary also looks gorgeous…a lot of cleavage, but still, she looks great!
Guest judges: Lil’ C and Christina Applegate (love her!)
Melanie and Twitch, Hip Hop w/ Nappy Tabs
My goodness is there ANYTHING that Melanie can’t do? She can be a light and floating angel with the kindest face ever, and then she can go and hit hip hop so damn hard and have a total stank face! She could go be in a video for any style of music, dance on any TV/Broadway show, and just do anything that anyone ever needs a dancer for. The girl can do no wrong.
Sasha and Kent, Contemporary w/ Tyce DiOrio
Tyce, please just choreograph contemporary duets and only do Broadway group numbers because no Broadway you have ever done could even compare to pieces like this. Sasha has this amazing power to draw you in, no matter what she’s doing. I can feel every emotion she’s putting out there, and I can’t not watch every little movement and nuance. For once, Lil C said it exactly right: watching her, you feel like she’s talking to YOU and you alone. Indescribable.
Marko and Janette, Paso Doble w/ Dmitry Chaplin
While I was not a fan of the music, I thought Marko really did a great job with this routine. He really went for it and asserted himself very well. I absolutely loved the lift where it was as if Janette was the cape, and then they went and did it TWICE! Loved it. I mean, obviously this isn’t going to be in the finale or on the tour, but I thought it was good.
Ricky did a solo. I don’t like him. That’s not going to change. Sorry bout it. I also just don’t like solos that much in general.
Tad and Ellenore, Jazz w/ Sonya
I’m not really sure how I felt about that routine. There wasn’t really much dancing involved, and it felt more like a sexless, medieval karma sutra photo shoot. I agree with Nigel that it needed to develop more. There were some pretty cool moments, like when Tad braced himself on the chair in a split and when he spun on the chandelier. He really did do a great job, actually! Christina Applegate pointed out (pun intended) his pointed toes and technique, which is so true. You forget he’s a bboy! I don’t know that this will help Tad beat out Ricky…shoot.
Well Caitlynn had to pull out her best solo to have a chance against the powerhouses, and I definitely think that was her best solo yet. But…not good enough to beat Sasha or Melanie. She’s young, gorgeous, and talented, so when she gets kicked off tomorrow, I know she’s going to have an amazing career ahead. Love her!
Ricky and Jamie, Contemporary w/ Dee Caspary
Well Jamie got gorgeous, stayed annoying (sorry), and stayed an amazing dancer. I don’t think those little chopstick things were necessary at all, sorry Dee. The dancing was good, but I totally agree with Christina when she said Ricky doesn’t dance with the “clearest intentions”, and maybe that’s why I haven’t liked him at all. That’s what I got. I have my favs and I stick to them, especially this far into the competition.
Tad’s solo was adorable as per usual! He’s so adorable, how can you not love him??? Vote, people, VOTE!
Talk about someone who wants to be in the finale! Damn, Sasha! That was your best solo yet! I don’t even like that song, but I was bopping along with you the whole time! Loved it!
Caitlynn and Pasha, Samba w/ Dmitry Chaplin
Well, Dmitry you FAIL for the music this week. I hated that. This was fine for me, and apparently according to Mary it was pretty darn good, but I didn’t particularly enjoy it that much. Maybe it was the face pulling that the judges mentioned that I didn’t like? I think it just seemed a little slow. Nothing bad, just not my favorite.
Marko’s mom is the cutest thing ever. She might make him win, honestly. Well that and the fact that he dances just like Travis in his solos! Seriously, the khaki shorts, the one the floor flip around, the scissor kicks, the smiling…dance twins!
Oh yeah, sorry Caitlynn, you just don’t have a chance. Seriously Melanie, you’re amazing and I adore you! Best solo of the season! The judges all even commented on it later after her next duet ☺
Sasha and Ricky, Whacking w/ Kimary Suraj
That was definitely a really fun routine. I really loved watching Sasha be so smiley! Compared to Princess Lockaroo from the auditions, it wasn’t the highest degree of difficulty, but I did like the “Soul Train groove” feel about it. And the ending was really cool with the turns and the fall to the ground. Sasha was much better than Ricky, obviously, but I do say he looked cute in his little yellow sweater.
Melanie and Tad, Broadway w/ Spencer Liff
What an amazing concept! I loved that, it was so interesting and unique! And a great song that I’ve never heard before! The chemistry between these two was unreal! It was like they were the only two people in that whole big room! Nigel is right, Melanie is truly an amazing actress. She hits every single emotion, and you just believe her, whatever she’s doing. And Christina is totally right about Tad’s hands – they are beautiful! I hope he makes it to the finale because we all know Melanie will.
Caitlynn and Marko, Jazz w/ Sonya
I’m not sure if I understood how the story related to this, but I definitely loved the dancing in it! They both did a fantastic job! It might have been because the cameras were far away and I couldn’t see their faces as much? Christina mentioned “beautiful aggression”, and that’s totally what that whole routine was. Definitely a great routine for Caitlynn to go out on because she was fabulous. She was really fighting for it. Marko, amazing as always. He’s so strong and supportive, and he’s going to the finale, DUH.
Well nerves are officially calmed. That was a FABULOUS Top 6 show. I really love all of them, but if the finale is not Melanie/Sasha/Marko/Tad (in that order of finish), I will be upset.
Best Duet: Sasha and Kent
Best Individual Performace: Melanie or Sasha, might give a slight edge to Melanie
Going home: Caitlynn and Ricky
Best Music: Tyce or Spencer, tie
Best Choreo: Spencer Liff
Worst Music: Both of Dmitry’s song choices
Best All-Star: Janette and Kent, can’t decide
Best Prop: The Wall
Worst Prop: The Chopsticks
Breakthrough Performance: Caitlynn (w/ Marko)
Start thinking about what encores you want to see in the finale!!! Pretty much everything of Melanie and Marko’s, Sasha and Twitch Misty Blue, and Marko and Allison’s Contemporary all come to mind…what else???

Now THAT is an Elite 8
It seems like FOREVER since last week’s episode! Is that just me? Perhaps!
All-stars round TWO tonight! I hope that they all dance with an all-star AND a contestant this week, but I’m not sure they could squeeze that all in. **Oh yay, they are doing that!**
Another interesting twist this week – Lady Gaga. As a judge, not a performer. She’s super awkward when she talks, so this should be interesting. She will mostlikely eventually employ some of these guys though, so they should for sure bring their A-game tonight. Interesting that she is sitting in Nigel’s spot. Wow, she really does rule the universe. Rob Marshall is a guest judge too, which is also awesome considering his clout in the director/choreographer world, so it’s got to be a good show!
I haven’t really been commenting on Cat’s wardrobe this season, but I have to say she looks stunning this evening!
Sasha and Pasha - Quickstep w/ Jonathan Roberts
Sasha and Pasha, it’s easy to remember! Yes! They really are giving her the best all-stars! Sasha really did a great job on this, at least to me and my untrained eye! Of all the dancers this season, I could see Sasha as “Most Likely to Dance for Gaga”, so it was really nice to hear Gaga give her a sincere and glowing review!
Caitlynn and Ivan – Hip Hop w/ Marty Kudelka
Well that was just precious! Ivan is just too cute in these types of routines, and this was no exception. Caitlynn really held her own with him too. They were completely in sync and the chemistry was really great too. It was a little simple, and I feel like they used the beginning set up to use up a some actual dance time. I liked the choreo a lot though, but I could have used some lifts or floorwork or something else a little out of the ordinary.
Ade and Jordan – Jazz w/ Tyce DiOrio
As evidenced by their outfits, I’m pretty sure Ade was only there to show Jordan off in this routine. Although DAMN the man looks G-O-O-D. Anyways, back to Jordan though…she OWNED that! Every leap and lift and stretch was just awe inspiring. And Lady Gaga just showed off her shoes...WTF?!?! Jordan could also dance for Gaga, and I think after this, she probably will! Rob Marshall hit the nail on the head when he said that Jordan just goes for everything, no matter what! She really does push herself every week, and it’s truly inspiring and empowering.
Melanie and Neil – Contemporary w/ Mandy Moore
Holy crap, what an amazing exhibit of powerful dancing! That lift at the end?? She probably leapt 8 ft to fall into his arms. Mandy (with her 80’s music) is at her BEST – take that, Mia Michaels!!! I think Gaga literally jumped out of her seat to give Melanie a standing ovation and told her that she would hire her to dance on her tour tomorrow. And she’s Gaga’s favorite…possibly the best compliment anyone in the entertainment industry could ever get. And her critique made me cry a little bit. I’ve loved Melanie from her very first audition, and she just gets stronger and stronger! She better win. Period.
Ricky and Anya – Jive w/ Jason Gilkison
Well for all that I hate on Ricky, he really did do a respectable job on this. His feet were flying right along with hers, and his carriage was solid. I do have to say though, Anya lifting Ricky = AWESOME. Ricky lifting Anya = kinda awkward. Loved the song and the choreo, and of course ANYA!
Jess and Lauren Gottlieb – Lyrical Hip Hop w/ Nappy Tabs
At first I thought they were keeping Jess on the floor to avoid him actually doing hip hop, but he actually stood up and did a pretty damn good job! Their synchronisity was spot on, and as Mary said, Jess really did have some swag. I think he really took NPH’s advice about not mugging and being sincere in his performance. Jess really has grown and improved throughout this season. Rob Marshall let it out that Jess was in The Grinch on Broadway! Can anyone else just see him as a little Who from Who-ville?? I can!
Tad and Lauren Froderman – Jazz w/ Mandy Moore
Woah, Mandy looked pretty disappointed when they flashed to her at the end of that. Weird. I thought it was good and fun, just nothing super memorable (story-wise at least). For how much I absolutely love Lauren, I thought Tad definitely out-danced his all-star [again]. Like Mary said, he was just “cool” on stage. I just adore watching him move because he’s so unique! The chemistry wasn’t great for me, but when Gaga complemented the androgyny of it, it made me ok with it.
Marko and Allison – Contemporary w/ Sonya
And everyone’s crying. Me, the dancers, all the judges, half the audience. Wow. Just WOW. Gaga can’t even speak in her critique because it was just that moving. There are not even any words to describe how beautiful that was. You just have to watch it. And Marko’s mom came in from Guam to see the show live for the first time. It must be so hard to dance with Allison because she is so good, but Marko can definitely get on her level, which is a compliment of the highest level on this show. And now I think Marko should win. Shoot!
Caitlynn and Tad – Foxtrot w/ Jonathan Roberts
I think Caitlynn’s going to win Best Dressed again – so gorgeous! That was a beautiful and classic feeling foxtrot, and I really liked the chemistry between the two of them. They are both so great at getting into character, and they really swept me into another time! Mary gave some pro critiques that weren’t so great, but I didn’t even care honestly. It was so flowy and wonderful! The judges were a little harsh on Caitlynn’s “competition” personality, which I have to say I didn’t really notice until tonight.
Marko and Ricky – Hip Hop w/ Nappy Tabs
Want a sure fire way to make one guy look bad? Put him in a routine with the best guy in the competition. Marko OWNED that routine, and it was like Ricky wasn’t even in it. I only looked at him when I consciously realized that I had only been looking at Marko for awhile. Nigel said Ricky might be in the bottom, and y’all know I hope so. Marko though – pure genius. Great choreo and fun routine, but not especially memorable, probably because of Ricky. Sorry bout it.
Jordan and Jess – Rumba w/ Jason Gilkison
Well, we finally got the first rumba of the season, and that was some pretty clever choreo on Jason’s part to make it just like a contemporary piece. As Gaga said, there was nothing “wrong” with it per se, but it wasn’t my favorite. I think by default, it would have to be my least favorite piece of the night, just because the rest were so strong!
Sasha and Melanie – Jazz w/ Sonya
Can you say Dream Team? What a fantastic piece of work! Even Sonya was just amazed at how well that turned out! I just adored the two of those girls together. It was as if they were screaming “YEAH! BRING IT!” at each other with their eyes. I think Gaga might need to ditch LoriAnn Gibson and hire Sonya for a video one of these days. And these girls. They were the perfect example of strength and power. The two girls are clearly so different in style and appearance, but they just complemented each other absolutely perfectly. Lady Gaga threw a giant shoe at them for goodness sakes! And the other one at Sonya! One of these girls better win and I don’t know who!!!!
That was by far the best episode of this show I’ve ever seen. I guess the all-stars told everyone who’s ever been on the show to come watch tonight because they were all in the audience. I loved every routine so much, and I want them all to win! Except Ricky. Sorry buddy! These awards are going to have a lot of ties tonight. Sorry!
BOTN: Melanie and Sasha, Melanie and Neil, Allison and Marko. I can’t decide, and it’s my blog so you can’t make me.
Best Performance: Jordan and Ade (but mostly Jordan), Melanie and Neil
Best Choreo: Sonya (both) and Mandy Moore (Melanie and Neil’s piece)
Best Dressed: Caitlynn in the foxtrot
Best All-star: Allison, DUH
Best Guest Judge of the Season: Gaga
Breakthrough Performance: Jess
Best Body: Neil or Ade…edge to Neil with his open shirt.
Best Tear Inducing Performance That Didn’t Involved Cancer or Abuse: Marko and Allison...seriously, that was just ridiculous
Best Music: Mandy Moore
Best Legs: Jordan, by like 5 miles
Most Adorable: Tad
Best Lift: Anya
B2 Girls: Caitlynn and Jordan…sorry Jordan, you’re awesome and I love you but Melanie and Sasha are just better
B2 Guys: Ricky and Jess…Tad’s too darn loveable and Marko’s too damn good
In my humble opinion, Caitlynn and Ricky will get the boot tomorrow night, not because they’re not great, just because the rest are better. Neither of them will be lacking work though, and I’m sure we’ll see plenty of their performances on tour and in the finale!
I can only imagine how great the Melanie/Marko/Sasha/Tad finale is going to be. I’m going to go vote for all 4 of them right now to help make that happen!
You're On Your Own Now...
Well, I can’t say I’m all too pleased that Ryan isn’t in the Top 10 to fend for herself without her chemistry-less partnership, I don’t know who I would have sacrificed to get her there, so I guess it’s ok.
The Top 10 get to dance with All-Stars, which I’ll admit I was torn about last season, but I am pretty excited about this season. Hopefully they get to dance with fellow contestants as well.
Also, NPH is the guest judge this week, and I’m especially excited about that since I’ve been gorging on How I Met Your Mother recently. And tour tickets go on sale next week?! Yay! Here’s hoping they come to Austin…or at least San Antonio.
Marko and Chelsie Hightower – Samba w/ Jason Gilkison
I think everyone was worried for Marko going off on his own without Melanie, and I was especially worried since it’s almost impossible not to watch Chelsie when she’s doing her thing, but I am so proud of him! Damn! I don’t know if it was just the lights or what, but it seemed like his hips were moving a mile a minute! Also, those lifts were seriously insane! Loved it!
Sasha’s solo was great, dance-wise, but I really wish she’d engaged the audience/camera a little bit more.
Jordan and Brandon – Contemporary w/ Dwight Rhoden & Desmond Richardson
I am so happy Brandon is an All-Star this year, he’s so fabulous! That being said, the choreography really played more to him than it did to Jordan, which is unfortunate because she really did a great job! But, it’s a bit hard to pay attention to her when he’s jumping and turning a million times into a middle split as if it was nothing. Jordan did do an amazing job though, and I especially loved when Brandon turned her around on one leg. She was flowy and effortless, and they were always in sync, which is important in Dwight and Desmond’s pieces. Yay Jordan!
Jess’ solo was fun and wonderful, but he’s reverting back to his annoying little smug face a bit, and I don’t like it.
Tadd and Comfort – Hip Hop w/ Chuck Maldonado
Well it wasn’t exactly memorable in terms of story, but damn that was some good hip hop dancing. Tad is pretty much amazing! As Nigel said, it was very very very very very very fast, and he did everything right! I even watched Comfort slip up a little bit, but Tad was right on the whole time. I especially loved when they were both on the floor essentially on their knees and they pulled themselves around…TWICE! NPH even loved it too ☺
Melanie’s solo was just fabulous, and I love her. SO MUCH. 1-866-TEMPO-03, baby!!!
Mitchell and Melody – Broadway w/ Tyce DiOrio
I’m pretty h-core, but I don’t know anything about Melody, so this was a pleasant surprise. She did look slightly unsure of herself throughout the piece. I’m a little bit with NPH though, it was a bit disjointed and I didn’t really get it. Usually Mitchell has good chemistry with his partner, but maybe the Broadway genre brought out the gay in him? The judges said he overplayed it, and I definitely agree. It’s about the details and the style, which weren’t all there.
Ricky’s solo was pretty much usual Ricky. Amazing elevation, great center, beautiful dance, but I don’t really get anything from him and this didn’t change that at all.
I liked Clarice’s solo, it definitely showed versality, but is it me or does it always look like she’s chewing gum?! Weird.
Caitlynn and Pasha – Argentine Tango w/ Miriam LaRici and Leonardo (Long last name!!!!)
It’s legitimately impossible not to have chemistry with Pasha. Are you serious?! The looks in both of their eyes - so hot! Caitlynn did a fabulous job with her footwork and all the kicks and flicks, and the lifts were so great! She was slightly awkward when she went backward, but not so much to detract from the dance at all. Pasha really does bring out the best ballroom in everyone! And, I don’t even have to see any other outfits to know that Caitlynn is going to win my best dressed award tonight. Nigel really gave her some really great compliments, which was nice to hear coming from him.
I can’t even focus on what an amazing dancer Mitchell is because he is literally wearing a DIAPER for his solo. Fail.
Sasha and Twitch – Hip Hop w/ Christopher Scott
FINALLY SASHA HAS A LEGIT PARTNER AND OMG WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT MAKES! YES THESE ALL CAPS ARE 100% INTENTIONAL! That was BY FAR the best hip-hop routine of the season, Sasha’s best routine of the season, and just straight up amazing. It might have been my overall favorite routine of the season so far…seriously Christopher Scott is a GENIUS! As is Twitch. As is Sasha! They KILLED that! Nigel said “Sasha I think this is the first time I’ve seen you have chemistry with you partner” and to that I say DUH!!! Maybe you should have partnered her with someone who wasn’t lame and creepy! NPH said they should dance every dance together, and I wholeheartedly agree. I’m gonna watch that again now…RIGHT NOW. And after that I will be downloading “Misty Blue”.
Jordan performed her best solo thus far tonight! It was so lovely and contained, and she showed her strong center, which she hadn’t really shown before!
Jess and Kathryn – Contemporary w/ Stacy Tookey
Wow I’ve missed Kathryn. She is SOOOO gorgeous to watch! That was a beautiful routine, but as he said in his video package, Jess really does struggle with lifts. A couple of the longer ones were a bit awkward, but the little ones worked out great. I especially liked the one where he was sitting and lifted her over him. The judges all thought this was the best that Jess has done this season, and I might agree with that…either this or the adorable foxtrot that he and Clarice did.
Omg Tad, when you hold yourself over the stage it freaks me out! And amazes me! Loved his solo, he is absolutely adorable!
Melanie and Pasha – Viennese Waltz w/ Jason Gilkison
Pasha shirtless is fine by me in ANY routine. I actually think it should be like that in every routine. That was just a beautiful routine. As Mary said, it was like Melanie was floating the whole time. They did so many lifts, and they all looked effortless. Plus, the chemistry between them was as amazing as if she were dancing with Marko. But again, it’s impossible for anyone to NOT have chemistry with Pasha. The one thing about Melanie that I did notice was her hands could have been a little more elegant, but whatever, she’s amazing and I love her. She really is the “rock” in this competition, literally and in dance metaphors.
I love how much Caitlynn engages the audience when she dances! It really makes me feel included in her moment, which is just awesome!
Ricky and Allison – Jazz w/ Tyce DiOrio
I really hope that Ricky doesn’t pull Allison votes on this one (she’s not competing anymore, people!!!) because I didn’t enjoy Ricky in this at all. I liked the piece and the choreo, but Allison stole that whole show. I disagree with Nigel saying he danced up to Allison’s standard – BS.
I love Marko. LOVE him! Maybe it’s because he dances like Travis, maybe it’s because I can’t believe he’s got a bullet in his arm, I don’t know, but I just love him!
Clarice and Robert – Bollywood w/ Nukul
After a few duds this season, Nukul finally came through with a good Bollywood routine! It was really dynamic and complex, and they were BOTH great in it! Minus the first Bollywood we ever saw (shout out to Katee and Joshua!), I never find Bollywood that memorable, but that was good.
My weekly awards:
BOTN: Sasha and Twitch
B3: Mitchell, Ricky, and I guess Clarice (by default and because I don’t want to put 3 boys in there)
Best Performance: Sasha and Twitch
Worst Performance: Mitchell and Melody
Best Choreo: Christopher Scott (by a MILE)
Best Dressed: Caitlynn in her Tango, Melanie is a close second
Best All-star: Pasha!
Best Solo: Marko
I also have to give a shout out to NPH for being a legit guest judge! Loved him!

Dirty Dozen
It's the last week of the same couples, and to that I have to say THANK GOODNESS. This is the first time there hasn't been at least one couple switch, and I gotta say that's pretty disappointing. Plus, next week starts the all-star component of this season, which I'm curious about! I have no idea who's on board, what the format is gonna be, or anything at all, and I LOVE IT!
They must be doing 2 routines each this week because the video packages start right away! Yep, they are, here we go!
Sasha and Alex -
Pasa Doble w/ Tony and Melanie
Yes ballroom! And then it's a dance that could be so smoldering if it wasn't Sasha and...Alex. I am so over him, I really think his only role on the show is to follow Sasha around and hold her on some lifts. Sasha was strong and powerful and amazing as per usual. I can not wait to see her with a different partner, it's going to be so awesome! Judges loved her and kinda sorta mentioned that Alex was in the routine but not really.
Jazz w/ Tyce DiOrio
I really liked this! I completely visualized them dancing on the streets of New Orleans or something, and it was just a beautiful, natural, flowy, and fun! As Sonya said, Alex finally broke his shell, and I actually enjoyed watching him dance for the first time this season. Sasha was perfection, and it was nice to see a little bit of a soft side to her for a change. Plus she looked absolutely gorgeous. Well done, Tyce. I approve!
Jordan and Tadd -
Contemporary w/ Travis Wall
Last week, Nigel said Travis really wanted to work with Tad, so what a nice "coincidence" that he gets to this week. Love that the concept is women who take advantage of weak men - so creative, Travis! That was such a different piece than Travis usually does! Dark, creepy, and completely mesmerizing! Tad was fantastic, and Jordan KILLED. The chemistry and connection between them was so believable as well. Love this partnership so much!
Broadway w/ Spencer Liff
I was so excited about them dancing to RENT, but this routine was underwhelming, to quote Sonya. The moves were a it dainty for the rock style of song. I totally agreed with Nigel when he said they could have had more fun with it and been quirkier...it was definitely missing something. I kept waiting for it to build up to something, but it didn't really peak. The judges are pretty right on tonight with their critiques actually.
Ryan and Ricky -
Broadway w/ Spencer Liff
I love Spencer's routines, but the lack of chemistry between the two is truly palpable. They're both such great dancers, but them together does not bring out their individual bests. I would love for Ricky to get the hell outta there so Ryan can truly shine. That's all I got.
Cha Cha w/ Louis van Amstel
Well they were supposed to be hot, but I'm not so sure these two can be hot together. Nigel praised Ricky, but I still am not buying him. Unlike Mitchell he can not play the straight man well enough for me. Even my non-dancer butt could tell that this was a fast and intricate cha cha. I loved Ryan's death spiral-esque thing when she was in a vertical split and spun down to the floor - INSANE. I loved that Sonya kept it real for Ryan and basically said she's feeling a lot of pressure and letting it get to her dance. I hope Ryan takes that and uses it to make her stronger because omg is she talented!
Caitlynn and Mitchell -
Hip Hop w/ Chris Scott
This is a routine dedicated to Invisible Children, which is something that hasn't been done before. However, Chris Scott's face after the routine pretty much said it all. It was kind of disappointing. Although Caitlynn's face is really expressive, I didn't really buy her in the hip hop genre. Plus they weren't in sync at all, which was pretty distracting. And I didn't see how the choreo was connected to the inspiration. Pretty much in total agreement with the judges.
Jazz w/ Travis Wall
Well that was totally hot. There were also some crazy lifts, damn Travis! These two dance with such conviction, I just love it! I loved the concept, the moves, the outfits (Caitlynn = hot!), and pretty much everything about it!
Melanie and Marko -
Tango w/ Louis van Amstel
Louis is back, hooray! The tango is pretty much the perfect ance for these two to have, seeing as though they are the only couple with any chemistry. AND THEY KILLED THAT. Seriously, I felt like I was watching a ballroom competition routine. The way they look at eachother is so perfect, they move so well together, and it's impossible to not just stare at them in complete awe. The end lift where she went between his legs, flipped around, and came back down on one knee was so awesome!
Contemporary w/ Dee Caspary
I love that I can tell their choreographer based on what they're wearing right before the break. Does Dee just put all the girls in pink/grey/off-white every time? Dee is seriously the most artistic choreographer on this show - he thinks about everything so thoroughly, from the lighting to the timing to every detail of every lift. It doesn't hurt that he got the best couple in the show because they delivered on every level. Again, I totally agree with Nigel when he said it flowed so well that it didn't seem like a "routine" just natural movement and beauty.
Clarice and Jess -
Lyrical Hip Hop w/ Chris Scott
Ok this couple has finally crossed over completely to my good side! I loved this. I was totally thinking Jess couldn't do hip hop, but he totally rocked it! Clarice was fabulous, as per usual, and they were so cute together! Plus, I hated this song before, but this cover was fabulous and I'm pretty sure it contributed to me liking the routine more!
Jive w/ Tony and Melanie
Well her outfit is fabulous for starters. I actually thought they did a good job with this, but I agree with Nigel that it could have used a little more energy at times and Jess' lifts make me nervous. You could tell they got a little tired toward the end, especially in their faces. As far as footwork, they were great and in sync, and I was totally impressed! These two just improve every week, but I'm slightly worried for Jess if he gets to the Top 10...he's really short, who else besides Caitlynn could he dance with?
BOTN: Sasha and Alex's Jazz
B3: Jordan and Tadd, Ryan and Ricky, Caitlynn and Mitchell (by default, I guess)
-Going home: Ricky and Jordan, I don't know why I think this, but I that's my prediction/ hope, even though I really like Jordan
Best Couple: Melanie and Marko - who's surprised? NO ONE.
Best Performance: Clarice and Jess' Lyrical Hip Hop - I really loved this one!
Best Outfit: Clarice's Jive dress
Worst Outfit: Tad's kilt
Biggest Surprise: Alex in the Jazz routine, Jess in the Hip Hop routine
Best Choreo: Tyce's Jazz, Travis' Contemporary
Worst Choreo: Spencer Liff - what happened buddy, I usually like you!
Best Music: Clarice and Jess' Hip Hop
Also, all-stars are announced tomorrow, and assuming there will not be repeats from last season, here is my wish list:
- Alex Wong
- Jakob Karr
- Mollee Gray
- Gev
- Heidi (yeah right that will never happen)
- Dmitry (doubt he can do it with DWTS)
- Phillip
- Kayla
- Evan
- Katee
Zzzzz
This week's shows put me to sleep. I know I'm really tired from a kinda crazy vacation, but still...disappointing.
I'm still reeling over the fact that 6/7 couples had a repeat style. C'mon, Nigel, MIX IT UP! Give anyone else the waltz! That alone would have helped the variety, and we could have seen Tad do contemporary! Anything to change it up a little!
And, getting rid of another set of partners? I feel like this is the first time that the Top 10 will go into it without anyone having had to change partners.
The B3 wasn't all that surprising, except for Ryan/Rickey. I thought Sasha/Alex would have been there for sure, but apparently Sasha's fan base is way stronger than I thought! The look of guilt on her face when she was safe and Ryan/Rickey weren't made me cringe a little bit.
As for the solos, Ryan and Chris' were my favorites. Rickey's wasn't even close to as good as the one he did in double elimination week, and Tad's didn't showcase much dancing. Jordan kicked her leg up a lot, but that was it, and Ashley's was pretty but dull.
I'm not surprised that Ashley went home because America doesn't seem to be connecting with her, but I kind of thought they'd send Rickey home and give prodigy-child Ryan a chance to impress America with a better partner. Honestly, I'm a little bummed they didn't do that.
On to next week...this is what I want to see: 1) 2 dances/ couple or at least some small group numbers and 2) a cha cha, jive, samba, waltz, quickstep, and rumba. BRING IT.

Repeat Edition?
Ok I’m back and blogging after a week break for vacay!
Justin Giles is a first time SYTYCD choreographer, and he had the boys for a group number tonight. I am always worried for the newbies who don’t know the stage and the failures of the cameramen, but that was ridiculously good! So simple, but it was so enthralling that I couldn’t tear my eyes away,. Sometimes I have a hard time not just focusing on one person when they’re all doing separate movements, but they all came together, and I could see the dance as a whole. And it’s about time the guys got a chance to shine since they’ve been pimping the girls all season.
Melanie and Marko, Jazz w/ Ray Leeper
I’m not sure what the costumers have against Melanie, but that outfit is more atrocious than last week’s disaster. Thankfully, the dance completely drew me in and once it got going, I didn’t even notice the horrid outfit. I didn’t really see how the story of a couple eloping fit in with that, but it was just such strong dancing. Their turns are strong and sharp, their leaps are like they came off a trampoline, and they’re always so in sync! They way those two look at each other is just priceless. Too bad she’s got a boyfriend ☹
Sasha and Alexander, Hip Hop w/ Shawn Evaristo
This is a new choreographer too! I guess they gave the regulars a week off? I like the concept of this routine – guy trying to get a kiss after a first date – and for the first time, I actually didn’t hate Alex. I thought his facial expressions were cheesy and kinda lame, but I thought they were really cute in it. Not the best hip-hop I’ve ever seen, but I was on the same page as Travis about it. Maybe this will put them in the bottom and send Alexander home…oooh I’d be ok with that.
Jordan and Tad, Waltz w/ Toni Redpath
First of all, WHY IN THE WORLD DO THEY HAVE WALTZ AGAIN??? I am not ok with this – give it to someone else. Secondly, I adore Toni Redpath as a judge, but I don’t like her choreography at all. I don’t know why, but I just don’t get it. I know they probably did it better technically this time around, but I just liked the dance better when they waltzed 2 weeks ago. Still thought they were great though, and Tad definitely does ballroom better than any of the other hip-hop dancers…oh wait, everyone else who did it got kicked off already.
Clarice and Jess, Contemporary w/ Justin Giles
Wow, he gets two numbers in his first ever show…way to go, Justin Giles. This was almost a hip-hoppy contemporary number. It was pretty cool, but I wasn’t buying Clarice’s performance. Her dance is great, but I can’t feel her emotions when she dances. Travis complimented Justin Giles’ musicality, and I am in total agreement with that! The judges thought it was Clarice and Jess’ best performance yet, which I don’t necessarily agree with, but ok then.
Ashley and Chris, Salsa w/ Liz Lira
I think I completely agreed with the judges on this one. The lifts were AWESOME! Props to Ashley for doing them and Chris for some pretty amazing partnering skills! As for the feel of it, it was almost there but didn’t quite hit the note I wanted out of it. Definitely missing the salsa “spice” a little bit. I thought Ashley was the better of the two, but that might be unfair since she has a sparkle dress to shake around and he doesn’t have anything equivalent.
Ryan and Rickey, Jazz w/ Chucky Klapow
Ok it really was a week off for all the regulars. Another new chorepgrapher! I am loving this one a ton! This was such a fun and funky number! It had a story, but not one that overwhelmed everything else. The music was perfect, and both of them were really able to get in character. Ryan really shined in this one, as per usual, but Rickey was fabulous as well! Just great!
Caitlynn and Mitchell, Contemporary w/ Mandy Moore
My favorite number of the night (like Mary!). This was just straight up gorgeous dancing! Passion, great music, synchronicity, everything was just fabulous! This one really reminded me of Melissa and Ade’s first dance together with Mandy mixed with Katee and Joshua’s reunion in the Top 6 with Tyce. These two are the emotional beasts of the season…dare I say, maybe even more extreme than Melanie and Marko? Loved it loved it loved it!
The Girls did a Ray Leeper routine about ridding the world of all the boys…fabulous idea in theory, right? I thought so. This was a super cool routine! Very smooth and sexy, I was totally into it. I have to say, there is literally no way for me to not watch Ryan and Melanie in these group numbers. They are just heads above everyone else. Something about their movements is just larger than life, and I (and the cameramen) can not look away. Sorry everyone else, but they’re just all over it.
I AM TAKING TIME RIGHT NOW TO VENT IN ALL CAPS. 5 OUT OF 7 COUPLES HAD REPEAT STYLES. IN WEEK 4!!! WTF THAT IS JUST UNACCEPTABLE. THEY BETTER HAVE SOME VARIETY NEXT WEEK AND NO MORE CONTEMPORARY OR JAZZ FOR ONCE.
Ok venting done, now for my superlatives…I’m loving this more and more!

Top 16 (Performance + Results)
So I was in Vail, CO for the week, and I only watched the Top 16 routines on a computer, which as you know does NOT do them justice! However, my opinions are based on that before I rewatched on TV knowing everything that happened.
BOTN: Melanie and Marko, no question. I could watch that dance on loop all day!
B3: Ashley and Chris (Sonya, sorry but that dance was dumb), Miranda and Robert (not because it was bad, just because it was nothing special), and I guess Caitlynn and Mitchell (but they were also good, it just didn't have a story to latch onto).
Best Choreo: NappyTabs are you serious??? Apparently they can put together 2 good routines for one show this season. LOVE.
Best Outfit: Clarice! Drop dead GORGEOUS.
Worst Outfit: Melanie. Seriously, why would you do that to her?
Best Group Number: Dee Caspary! Tyce's was so typical, I really loved the originality of Dee's piece!
Best Performance: Ryan and Rickey - keeping such strong emotions showing while working with a prop was really impressive.
Most Frustrating Person That Hasn't Been Out of Their Style Yet: Jess! Give the man some hip-hop, a samba, SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
As for the results, I wasn't surprised or upset, to be perfectly honest. These two should have been gone the first week and prevented that brutal double elimination, so I've been bitter about that since. Miranda really didn't add anything to the show, and Robert just could not keep up. It may sound harsh, but that's my honest opinion!
Really excited for the Top 14 and the fact that I get to watch it so soon after seeing the Top 16! I hope that somehow Alexander goes this week, but I don't see that happening because it would require Sasha to somehow be in the B3. But I think that's a risk I'm willing to take. Maybe get rid of Alex and...shoot I don't know, I love all the girls! Guess we'll see what happens!

Here We Go Again - Top 20, Round 2
Can I just how much I LOVED the intro in couples this week? It was fantastic, why don’t they always do that??
I also love that Debbie Reynolds is on the panel this week! I’m a huge dork, and have loved her since I was little! I remember going to a Debbie Reynolds exhibit in Vegas when I was a kid and watching Singin’ in the Rain and she’s just great! “It’s fantastic to be alive”?! HA, love it!
Ryan and Ricky – Jazz, Mandy Moore
The dance was supposed to be sexy, and the dancing definitely was! I usually prefer Mandy’s dances when they have a story, but it was still incredible dancing! I was actually really impressed with Ricky. Ryan usually steals focus from everyone else on stage, but he really brought it tonight! In total agreement with Mary that he was a great partner as well!
Caitlynn and Mitchell – Contemporary, Stacey Tookey
Well that is Adele song #1 of the season – I’m betting we’ll hear at least 5 songs off 21 this season! This was a surprisingly good routine – Stacy Tookey is great! For how gay Mitchell is in the video clips (not being derogatory, just honest), the relationship and chemistry on stage seemed real. Caitlynn is as gorgeous a dancer as she is a person, and I am definitely happy with this couple!
Missy and Wadi – Cha Cha, Jean Marc Genereux
That was slightly painful to watch. Everything seemed super slow motion, and excuse me Jean Marc, that was NOT the hardest Cha Cha you’ve ever choreographed. There was pretty much nothing in that. Wadi was great at the lifts but awkward as all get out on anything with steps. His arms and back didn’t stay up and he just looked uncomfortable. Nigel complimented Missy a ton, but I didn’t think she was great either. She pretty much just walked around the stay trying to look sexy. Blah.
Iveta and Nick - Bollywood, Nakul
There’s just something about watching two white people do Bollywood that is a little off-putting to me, especially when one loks like she’s 45 and the other looks like he’s 17. I agree with Nigel that it wasn’t as strong as other Bollywood routines that have been on the show, and unfortunately it’s impossible to not compare on this show. Overall rating – average at best.
Miranda and Robert – Hip Hop, Nappy Tabs
Not gonna lie, that was a weird concept, but I actually liked the dancing! Miranda was pretty darn good at hip-hop, and Robert was great in his element, humorous hip hop, and handled the choreography really well. They did some good job staying in sync, hitting hard, and flipping around on stage. Such a pleasant surprise!
Clarice and Jess – Contemporary, Stacey Tookey
When I saw this was a Royal Wedding piece, I really thought I was going to hate it, but it was so sweet and cute and wonderful! They looked straight out of a Disney movie love scene, and I loved it! Jess’ center is so impressive, he can spin for days! The parts where they were doing moves side-by-side, they were so in sync, and I was in awe. Nigel didn’t love it and was worried for them, but I really enjoyed it!
Jordan and Tad – Viennese Waltz, Jean Marc Genereux
That was just gorgeous! Tad has BY FAR done the best at ballroom of all the b-boys! What a surprise! His arms were great, his feet were great, and he was such a strong leader! Jordan was gorgeous and so far from her usual “sexy” stage persona. They were just so lovely to watch. There were some gorgeous lifts; I loved the use of the bench; and their chemistry was perfect! Loved it!
Melanie and Marko – Jazz, Mandy Moore
There’s so much pressure when you’re the overwhelmingly favorite after the first week, and they 100% lived up to it! I loved how this routine was kind of split into two routines, one broadway jazz and one contemporary jazz, and I loved how Many used some of the same steps in different ways! These two are absolutely incredible, there’s not much more I can say! Great personalities, amazing technique, fabulous acting and getting into character, there’s nothing about them I don’t like!
Sasha and Alexander – Hip Hop, Nappy Tabs
Well I hated this song going into the routine, and now I like it thanks to the glory of NappyTabs! This was the perfect routine for Sasha because she rocked the lyrical part in the beginning, which was essentially a solo. Mary put it perfectly – she really showed her SOUL and she absolutely always does. Combine that with her incredible dancing skills, and I smell a spot in the finale. The judges fawned over her, as they should have, and pretty much ignored Alex. I wish she Sasha a different partner, but I think I can work with this. Alex actually did a great job, and I especially liked the headstand of Sasha’s back!
Ashley and Chris – Broadway, Spencer Liff
Initial response – “woah that was AWESOME”! That was the most unique routine I’ve ever seen on the show! Spencer Liff is so creative! I didn’t know how the bar thing was going to affect their chemistry, but it really didn’t at all! They seemed so into each other, and they were still able to do some amazing moves! I loved the alternating high kicks through the bars and all of Chris’ climbing. Ashley was smoldering hot, and I loved everything about this routine!!! First hot tamale train of the season! Woooo woooo!!! Oh Mary, I missed you!
Tomorrow is going to be REALLY hard! Because there were so many dances, I think the people at the beginning might be in danger, sorry Ryan ☹
B3: Missy and Wadi, Ivetta and Nick, Ryan and Ricky. In an ideal world, they would keep Ryan and Nick and pair them together from now on! Let’s all hope for that, shall we?!
BOTN: Ashley and Chris, Sasha and Alexander, Jordan and Tad…can’t decide! They all KILLED it!
Season 8 Top 20 Y'all!
Ok so I have guests in town, so this is straight up my "notes" from watching the show. Enjoy, lemme know what you think!
Jordan and Tad
- This is definitely a fun partnership! I wish they had more than 8 seconds to explore that!
- Afro jazz number was good, but I didn’t feel like they were having fun, no smiles, etc. Great dancing though!
- Showcased how powerful of dancers they both are. Tad especially stepped up to the plate. He was a great partner and really adapted to the style! Very proud of him!
Sasha and Alexander
- Do not like this partnership…Alex looks like a creeper face. Not a fan of this, producers. Wish she was with Wadi…
- Contemporary with Travis is always a good way to start your season. Everyone loves it regardless.
- Well, as I suspected, Alexander may as well have not been on the stage. Sasha KILLED that. I couldn’t not look at her. She’s so dramatic, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Every movement is precise and filled with meaning, and she just gives me goosebumps!
- Even after the performance, they didn’t seem to be comfortable together. At one point when she wasgetting a compliment from the judges, he gave her this look that seemed to say “Damn it, I’m going to be in your shadow this whole time.” YEP.
Clarice and Jess
- Well, someone had to get Jess…she didn’t look too excited at the reveal haha.
- They have broadway with Tyce, so clearly this is going to be awesome! Kent and Katee are assisting, so it’s DEFINITELY going to be amazing.
- Well that just left me beaming! It was so incredibly cute!!! The audience reaction said it all, they couldn’t shut up!
- Jess definitely improved his “personality” aka he really seemed to be enjoying it, and their chemistry was surprisingly great!
- Judges seemed to fawn over Jess’s performance skills, which is a bit surprising actually!
Ryan and Ricky
- This should be an interesting partnership, since we don’t know much about Ricky and everyone LOVES Ryan.
- They have lyrical hip-hop with Chris Scott, so I have high hopes, especially because they have a story attached.
- Ryan is just straight up amazing. They way she emotes with her facial expressions and everything is just perfection. Nigel was confused by her smiling, but I read it that she was happy in the memory and being with him again, and he was missing her. She clarified that at the end ☺
- I really liked this piece, and I think this is going to be a good partnership! The only thing I would have wanted was a lift, maybe?
- Costume designers, step it UP. Ryan’s outfit was horrendous.
Caitlynn and Mitchell
- Well, we don’t know much about either of these two, but they have contemporary with Travis, so that’s a bonus. Since Mitchell’s hurt, she gets to dance with Robert which will only help her.
- Even though this was a Sonya piece, I didn’t get that fierceness feeling like I usually do. Unfortunately, Caitlynn doesn’t strike me as a strong woman type.
- There was almost no chemistry between her and Robert…there was a space between them that I can’t really describe.
- Caitlynn can DO the splits though, WOW. That one spin when she was in a full middle split! To quote Ckenn, “Owww, my crotch!” Seriously.
Miranda and Robert
- I actually called this couple! Yay!
- I love Robert and his nerdy fast talking Steve Urkel-ness, but I don’t know much about Miranda. I’m equating her to Kathryn for some reason. It will be interesting to see how they handle a Jason Gilkison jive.
- Cute and fun dance, I just don’t really love Miranda I think. As she said in the package, she’s not really “sexy” per se. Also, Robert’s arms could use some work…he was a little off on the partnering elements with his arms.
Missy and Wadi
- Damn it!!! My least favorite girl got my favorite guy. I hate when that happens. She’s clearly going to stay longer than I would like.
- Sean Cheeseman jazz, so at least it won’t be a contemporary dance in a jazz outfit. I wish it wasn’t to Juas by Gaga though.
- Well Wadi stole that show for sure! He’s so dynamic and powerful! At the end he was doing parkor off the cube for goodness sakes!
Melanie and Marko
- YAY! What a great couple, I love them both! This is a power couple for sure.
- Contemporary with Travis. Another contemporary. Great.
- Love this statue concept, very cool Travis, good call!
- This was absolutely beautiful! I got goosebumps and was completely drawn in the entire time. There is something soft and vulnerable and just lovely about Melanie, I swear! And they have absolutely amazing chemistry!
- Nigel predicted this could be an Emmy nominated routine! At the very least, we will definitely be seeing it again in the finale!
Ashley and Christopher
- Not sure what to think about this couple. They do look cute together, so that’s good!
- Christopher Scott hip-hop about a couple who finds out they’re both cheating on each other…interesting concept! And to “F*ck you”, so great!
- Ashley was great in this routine! She had attitude AND she was hilarious, and of course she rocked the dancing! I have loved her from the beginning, and this just proved why!
Iveta and Nick
- Well, I’m still not sure how I feel about Iveta yet, but I love Nick, so I have hope for their Jason Gilkison Quickstep. Jason always brings story to his ballroom routines, which really makes them more relatable for us normal folk.
- This was a great routine! Still don’t know how I feel about Iveta after it, but it was a really good dance. Nick totally held his own with her, which is amazing for him! Even Mary was impressed!
- I don’t think I can really judge them as a couple until they have a non-ballroom dance. They’ll be around for a bit, probably.
Best of the Night (BOTN): Melanie and Marko Statue dance HANDS DOWN
B3 Prediction: Miranda and Robert, Caitlynn and Mitchell/Robert, and Sasha and Alexander (pains me to say it but the dude is CREEPY)

That was just too good.
Vegas was so good last night that I couldn't even take notes. I was literally enthralled by every minute of those 2 hours and I couldn't focus on anything but watching. For that reason, I'm not going to do a real blog entry. I'm just going to adjust my Top 20 predictions since they didn't actually do the reveal yet! I was beyond surprised at some of the cuts - a TON of talented people left (some of them very early), which was sad, but it just goes to show how talented the ones who are left must be! Can't wait to find out who they are! I was most sad about DC Chapman leaving, since I loved him and thought he was a lock for sure. I did love Debbie Allen's tough love for him though...best thing she's ever done on the show! And with that, here is my revised Top 20, leaving in a couple spots for wild cards that they didn't feature. I'll do my best to describe I guess?
Girls:
Ashley Rich
Ryan Ramirez
Sasha Mallory
Jordan Casanova
Iveta Liuskete
Melanie Moore
Curly haired brunette who Tyce called "perfection" after her solo...I'd know her if I saw her
Blond contemp girl with straight across bangs that they keep showing
Wild card
Wild card
Guys:
Robert Taylor
Jess LeProtto
Marko Germar (guy who got shot)
Wadi Jones (I think he's still in it right?)
Virgil Lil O Gadson
Brown haired ballroom guy who was right at the edge of the stage in his solo
Contemporary Guy who one of the judges said just went to the top of their list (never saw his name)
Wild card
Wild card
Wild card
So my guess is that they'll have 5 people who they didn't heavily feature, which will be fine as long as they're paired with a partner that was featured. I really hope that Natalya Mallory makes it, I just can't decide if I think she will. I know they want the drama they had with Ryan and Evan, but maybe this time it goes the other way and both get in? She's also 18 which means she has a ton of time to come back and try another year as well. I don't know!!! Regardless of whether she makes it though, that girl is a legitimate inspiration to everyone out there who wants to go and dance. Work hard, have a great attitude, and you can do anything! When she was telling the judges why she deserved to be there, I cried as much as Mary. That girl is amazing, and I wish her all the success in life! Get it girl!

SLC, NYC, LA Auditions
SLC/NYC
SLC is up first, and, as much as I don't like it there, it really is a hotbed of dance talent. I really liked having the pussy cat dolls creator on the panel. She was actually a good judge, and it's nice to see the perspective of someone casting a different type of performer.
Devon McCullough and Micah Clark were two steppers that were really fun! I loved their routine because it was super in sync, very intense movements, but still incorporated some humor. Fabulous! Both got to choreo, but only Devon made it through to Vegas. I like him, so hopefully he does well.
Chyna Lee Smith is clearly someone that everyone who’s been on the show knows already. Name drop much? She’s absolutely gorgeous, but I didn’t really love her audition. It didn’t showcase that much dancing, but since they obviously know her and she has technique, she’s through to Vegas. I can see myself being impressed with her more in Vegas.
I really liked Annie Gratton. There was something about that little redhead that just stood out to me. Her dancing was athletic but she showed a wide range of moves and flexibility. Not the most technically impressive I’ve seen, but definitely a great audition! And then she got to dance with her dad, and I liked her even more! Vegas!
Good girl montage showcased a ton of talent!
Tadd Gadduang was a fun little breaker. He showed a ton of personality and some really unique moves! Such an entertainer should be off to Vegas, and he is!
Samantha Hiller’s story is something a little nutty. She apparently danced so hard she fainted and then got amnesia…3 WEEKS AGO! She’s been slowly getting things back, but it could take up to a year. She clearly remembered how to dance though! She’s not super great technically, but you can tell it’s because she’s young. Her spirit shines through beautifully though, and they send her to choreo. She doesn’t make it to Vegas this year, but I can see her coming back for sure.
Chase Thomas is approximately 1% body fat. And, he’s wearing baby bicycle shorts. He’s also married? To a woman? Ok then. He’s an amazing dancer, but he’s seriously so unlikable. I could see myself hating him on Top 20 and then he’ll get farther than he should.
And now for a good guy montage with a ton of good guys. Seriously I don’t know how they can possibly choose only 20!
The Brittney Starr/ Ringo Starr thing was pretty entertaining, but they kept it going for way too long. I can’t complain though because they’ve shown essentially no bad auditions this year, which I appreciate!
New York started with Princess Lockeroo who was pretty cool. Her arms fly around, and she’s got some pretty cool isolation/popping movements going on as well. She’s very unique, and I think she has other types of training as well. Judges loved her and sent her straight to Vegas!
Brandon Jones got thunderous applause as he approached the mic, so clearly he’s pretty well known in the New York dance world. I loved every second of watching him dance, and I definitely want him in the Top 20! I can’t even describe what grabbed me so much, but something did, and I liked it! I think he held back with his personality until he broke down about losing his father, but I can see him being very relatable and loveable on the show. Jason Gilkison described him perfectly – strong male dancer with so much softness. Vegas, of course!
I enjoyed the montage to the guys playing guitar. Nice change + they probably ran out of songs with dance in the chorus already!
Brian Henry the krumper is HOT. He’s also amazing at krump. I’m not sure that what he said about Russell and Lil C was that bad, maybe it was the editing? I think he was just trying to say he does it different. Clearly, because he krumps for Christ apparently. I really loved his audition though, and they sent him to choreo and then Vegas! I feel like we’ll be seeing a lot more of him.
Mary Kate Sheehan the Irish Step dancer is just as cute as a little button! Amazing audition piece too! She used the whole stage, showed much more than the usual “jig” I associate with Irish dancing, and exuded the most amazing spirit and grace! Judges loved her, but obviously they had to send her to choreo, but she nailed it and is going to Vegas!
Virgil Lil O Gadson was a fun breaker/ hip hop dancer. His perfectly balanced spins (while on his feet) make me think he’s had plenty of other training as well. He really got me with his smile though – so adorable! Straight to the Veg!
Jess LeProtto is a nice little combination of Evan and Nathan! He says oke doke, which normally would make me gag, but on him it’s adorable! He’s a musical theater/ jazz dancer, and he’s ridiculously talented, definitely more so than Evan. He’s going to have to work on his personality and sense of fun if he wants to be successful on this show. The serious ones never do well! He’s great though, I’m rooting for him. He’s sent to choreo first then Vegas, and I can assume he’ll be around awhile for the sake of one Tyce Diorio!
Kristen Dobson has the exact look that they love, and she’s a Latin dancer, which has been pretty non existent thus far. I like her, but it’s not the best audition I’ve seen, which makes sense since she’s only been doing this for 3 years. I have a feeling she’s got more to her though. They send her to choreo to test her other styles, but she makes it through to Vegas. Not surprising, we need ballroom people!
Robert Taylor Jr. is 30, so this is his last shot. I am really happy he’s good because it’s always sad to see people get their dreams crushed. He’s seriously really good though! His moves are hard hitting and dynamic, he brings humor and personality, what more could you really ask for? A ticket to Vegas? Ok!
Great auditions, SYTYCD producers. I really like where you’re going with it this season, I just hope you stay there! And don’t mess up the couples. And don’t give NappyTabs 2 routines in the first week, inevitably kicking off someone good (most likely a ballroom dancer). Just saying. Don’t do it!
LALA Land!
Just watching the scenery shots make me miss home and seeing these people all over the place! *Moment for a tiny little tear* Ok time for some good dancing! There should be plenty because EVERYONE lives there. Hence it's the only city they've been to every season!
Jordan Casanova is up first. She’s doing a super sexy routine to Beyonce, and it’s surprisingly good. I love when people can be sexy without being trashy. And clearly she’s got amazing technique. She did this amazing one footed spin into a split right in front of the stage, and I was sold. I could see her in Top 20, she’s made for TV. Loved the Nigel comment, “I’m going to have to be careful what I say, so I don’t sound like a dirty old man.” As if that’s different thatn usual, Nigel? ;) Vegas, DUH.
Derion DC Chapman is up next, and the home cameras of him and his family and his 5-months pregnant girlfriend (planned, really buddy?) makes me think he’s making the Top 20. That, plus his awesome interaction with the judges before he even starts = fan favorite, no question. Anyone who gets Nigel to get up and dance? People will love him! THANK GOOODNESS HE’S GOOD. Popping to “That’s Life”…bold and awesome! He’s this season’s Twitch. He did an amazing backflip into a worm and then came straight back up. Wow I’ve written a lot. I think I have a SYTYCD crush on him! SO GOOD. Best audition I’ve seen on this show! Ok clearly he is going to Vegas…and I’m gonna need to watch that audition again. Right now.
Ariel Koker is back again! I’m so happy that she keeps coming back, she’s just such a sweetheart, and she gets better every time she tries again. I wonder if she’s still dating Phillip…and right as I type that she pulls a total Phillip move. My goodness she’s incredible this year! Nigel called it mesmerizing, and that is the perfect description of it. I couldn’t even blink! She showed strength, flexibility, versatility, and FIRE! This has got to be her year!!!! Vegas of course, let’s just hope she can make the show this year!
Good person video montage…my god they are all so good!!!! Clearly the legit dancers know how good of a career move this show is. Just WOW.
Ok, I’m realizing that these auditions are going to be too good for me to write as much as I did for the first 3 much, so I’m gonna have to cut it back…
Hero McRae is here from Japan and she’s a popper…a very good one actually! Her isolations are so precise! And, I have a strange feeling she’s been trained in other styles as well. Total Top 20 candidate and headed to Vegas!
I guess Day 1 is the best day they’ve had in any city, and in any year. I know it’s a lot of editing, but that’s what it looked like.
Day 2 starts with weird, large, popping Santa Claus guy? Who strips and tears his shirt off? Just stop it.
Alexis Mason is auditioning, trying to continue the family legacy! She seems a little more classical and competitiony than Jeanine was, but with the same great technique. I don’t know that I like her permanent sad face though. Maybe it was her opening mouth, which Nigel told her to stop. Straight to Vegas, no brainer. Jeanine wouldn’t let her come if she wasn’t Vegas worthy, of course.
Patty Anne Miller is a hip-hop dancer in a cute little argyle sweater and hat for a bit of a preppy tomboy look. She’s a GREAT dancer. In her package she said she “feels rhythm” and that’s completely evident when she’s on stage. Fantastic audition! She is one of the most interesting people I’ve seen on this show…I think she’ll go far, but first, Vegas!
Another good dancer montage is up next, and again I am beyond impressed with every single clip they showed. I have no idea how they are going to cut it down to 20 people. I feel like I’ve seen 20 people today that would be good enough!
The Mallory sisters (Natalia and Sasha) are so cute! Their jazz/African routine is really good, and the best girl-girl duet I’ve seen, including the ones on the show because let’s be honest those haven’t been great. Tyce was a little harder on them than Nigel and Mary, but they were sent to choreo anyways. Sasha stood out as better in the choreo for me, but they both got through! I feel like one of them will make it through because who doesn’t love a good family story, right?
Vegas is next week and the previews are making me goosebumpy. Literally. I LOVE VEGAS. Going there, watching it on SYTYCD, and just thinking about its general wonderfulness. Is it next Wednesday yet???
New State for Season 8!
So I was really going to stop writing about this show like the dorky fan that I am, but since Season 7, I've moved to a new state (Texas!) making it more difficult to share my thoughts about the show with my equally dorky friends (sorry guys it's true). So, I'm back at it!
After a tediously long American Idol season that I did not watch, but rather counted down the days until the finale when SYTYCD starts, Season 8 has FINALLY arrived! If the season is anything like the promos they've been running, it's going to be extra goodt this summer! AND, what I learned a week or so ago - we're back to a Top 20!!! So excited, although, I'm not really surprised. Who else were they going to bring in as all-stars? Seriously. *crickets* There's no one better than the all stars from Season 7. Sorry bout it.
Also exciting - MARY IS BACK! I know lots of people don't like her high pitched screams or crazy outfits or hot tamale train, but I personally LOVE her, and I missed her a ton last season. She actually gives legitimate critiques, breathes life into the judges table, pumps up the contestants when/how they need it, and breaks up the monotony of Nigel and whatever other guest judge is trying to be straight up serious that week. Welcome back, Mary. You've been missed, at least by this girl.
And now, on to the auditions! My favorite part, especially now that they've really stopped showing the unbearably horrible auditions and just show people who might be bad, but they at least have a redeeming quality like graciousness, good personality, or humor. Atlanta always seems to bring good talent, and this round was no exception.
Bianca Hinklerian - She was super bubbly and had some of the fastest footwork ever! Her partner, Giovanni is only 17, but he will definitely be a force to be reckoned with next season. To be honest, he kind of stole the audition for me a little, which doesn't usually happen with a male ballroom dancer and a girl in hot pink, but Bianca was great too, and I can see her doing well in Vegas! (She went to choreo first just to make sure she wasn't all stiff and ballroomy I guess)
Melanie Moore - She kind of reminded me a little of Ginnifer Goodwin! Her moves were smooth and elegant, but she's clearly an athletic dancer as well. Little C said that "Zeus himself would invite you to dance on Olympus" which is a little weird, but she was clearly good enough (and trained enough) to go straight to Vegas. I could see her in the Top 20, or at least in the final cut. She's still in school, so I always wonder about what they do with those...
Deon and Damon (aka D-day) - I really thought they were going to be a joke audition because their whole package was them talking about coming out to get girls' numbers! But, they ended up doing a cute little hip-hop duet that showed a ton of personality. Personally, it was a little bit more "fluff" than I'm used to seeing on the show, but they both got straight through to Vegas. They must know them in the dance circuit? We'll see how they do.
*Insert good Atlanta audition montage here* - There was a break dancer wearing all white that looked really good, and a blonde girl with a red shirt who was good as well. They didn't show names, but I could see them being highlighted in Vegas potentially.
Marko Germar - SUCH A COOL STORY! He was robbed at gunpoint, shot, and now the bullet is still in his arm! The doctors told him that they'd have to break bone to get it out, and he didn't want to take the risk with his dancing so it's still in there. His video shots made him look like a breaker, but he auditioned with contemporary. It was strong, and he's clearly had training, but they put him through to choreo before sending him to Vegas. He could be a crowd pleaser and definite Top 20 material. We shall see...
Kimalee Piedad - I could have sworn she auditioned before, but I looked in last year's blog and found nothing...still, she seemed familiar. She did a partner routine with a partner who wasn't competing, and it was full of crazy lifts and partnering moves. She's clearly graceful, athletic, and talented, but I didn't get much personality from her yet. Straight to Vegas.
And now, someone who calls himself "White Chocolate" will kick off a bad dancer montage, which is thankfully very short!
Kyre Batiste - Ok this kid definitely doesn't look 18 yet, but he is just precious! They brought up his grandma to be a "guest judge" for his audition, and she is just as precious as him! I thought he was fantastic and fun with his popping and crazy leg moves, but the judges weren't as fond of it. Regardless, a "yes" from his grandma and Lil C get him to choreo but unfortunately not to Vegas. He seems like someone who will work at it and come back though.
That was it for the Atlanta audtions! From what Miss Cat Deeley told me, there were a record number of people sent to Vegas from these auditions, which only means Vegas is going to be extra tough this year! As if it wasn't hard enough already! Next audition stop is San Francisco/ the Bay Area (as they keep calling it). Definitely some solid talent here as well.
Amber Williams - Super crazy, quirky girl who dances really well! She danced to "Boots and Boys" which might be the first Ke$ha song I've heard that I liked the first time and not while out at a club. She's got super long legs and can jump so high! Nigel compared her to the "magic of the 60's performers" like Shirley McClaine and Ann Margaret, which totally hit the nail on the head! Another example of why I love Nigel Lythgoe! Clearly, she made it straight to Vegas...and then ran out of the room and theater with no shoes screaming about it!
Timothy Joseph - His promos have him jumping off buildings, trees, walls, etc. and his audition was no different. There were some unbelievable tricks in there, including this cool little crazy leg thing off the stage. His one-handed spins reminded me a lot of Legacy as well. The judges sent him to choreo, but I guess he tweaked his knee and didn't want to make it unfair for his partner, so he dropped out. Maybe he'll be back next year?
Next was a former stripper with no front teeth who liked to booty pop and after that a friend she met in line who was equally horrible. Then they showed a guy named Paul flailing around on stage with a close up of his rotting toenails. Awesome. Done with that.
Danielle Ihle - This was a typical SYTYCD sad story. Her dad lost his job, didn't tell the fam, then they lost their house and he abandoned the whole family. It's horrible actually, which makes me think that she'll definitely make the show. She's got a great center and can spin forever, kind of like the female version of Travis (she even wore one sock). The judges thought she didn't connect emotionally with her dance, which I totally agreed with, but she was definitely good enough to make it to choreo, and they sent her through to Vegas as I expected. I assume she's gonna be good in Vegas week.
Ashley Rich - My absolute favorite of the night! Her dancing completely drew me in - it was floaty and dreamy but showed a ton of athleticism as well. I can't even describe why, but I just LOVED her. Straight to Vegas, obviously, and I think she's a lock for the Top 20!
D'on-que Addison - This was an interesting audition to show. He cried a lot, the judges were perplexed, but he said "he did what he came here to do", so good for you, buddy!
Jeffrey McCann - Oh WOW this was an amazing bboy! I am slightly jaded because I feel like Cat always prefaces them with "Is this the best bboy ever???" and then it's not, but he very well could have been. He had some much skill and precision in his moves, but a ton more athleticism than I'm used to seeing from bboys. LOVE him. Straight to Vegas, and I think we'll be seeing him in the Top 20 as well.
Ryan Ramirez - Welcome back, girl! Loved you on Glee the other night! I just love her, always loved her, and I really hope she makes the show because she clearly has plently of work coming her way but she just really wants to be on the show! Come n Nigel, TOP 20!!!
There was a brief montage with some straight-to-Vegas-ers including Whitney Bezzant and Lilly Nguyen. Lilly looked like a contemporary dancer, but then she threw in some break dancing moves/spins - very unique, definitely want to see more of her. There was also a clip of a guy who called his signature move "the insect" because he looked like a contorted cricket jumping on the stage! Crazy!
The last guy to go was a Turfer named Levi Allen. In case you missed it, turfing = taking up room on the floor. It was a cool mixture of gliding, popping, and contorting, and it was definitely something I'd never seen before. The judges sent him to choreo, but it was too much for him to handle and he didn't make it to Vegas.
That was definitely one of the better audition episodes they've ever aired. I think we saw at least 2-3 Top 20'ers in the mix, and there was very little "filler" material, which Nigel should know I always appreciate! Can't wait for 2 episodes/week for the rest of the summer! Definitely looking forward to those 3 hours per week of solid dancing, and I have a new watching buddy in Texas which makes it even better!
